The North American economy has a growing skills gap between skills being demanded by employers and those the workforce can provide. Certification boards are uniquely positioned to champion entry into a field of practice, but first must be prepared to challenge their own structures and processes related to eligibility requirements.

This podcast is a thought-provoking call to action for certification bodies to consider how they:

Can recognize and promote non-traditional routes of entry to a career;
Might leverage their relationships with educational and other institutions to support upskilling/bridging opportunities for faster entry to practice; and
Take into account the barriers within one’s credentialing body that prevent change.

Carla Caro is a program director in Credentialing & Career Services at ACT and specializes in research activities supporting US-based and international credentialing organizations, including licensure and voluntary certification. She provides strategic guidance to organizations and conducts research on a variety of credentialing topics. Areas of expertise include practice analysis and competency modeling, development of assessment-based certificate programs, feasibility and value proposition studies, meeting facilitation, workforce development and survey research. Caro is a frequent presenter at industry conferences (including CLEAR, I.C.E., and ATP) and serves in volunteer leadership positions in industry associations. She has participated in the development of credentialing industry accreditation standards and has a special interest in microcredentialing.

Sandy Greenberg, PhD

ACT Credentialing & Career Services

Sandra (Sandy) Greenberg, PhD is vice president for Credentialing & Career Services at ACT, where her responsibilities include strategic planning; expanding client engagements in new sectors; and coaching and mentoring colleagues. Greenberg has conducted large-scale studies of professions; developed licensure and certification programs for sponsors of credentialing programs and certificate programs for universities and professional associations; conducted standard setting, feasibility and recertification studies; and developed observational scales, portfolio-based assessments and practical examinations for nationally and internationally recognized credentialing programs

Greenberg has been an active participant at the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (I.C.E.); the Council on Licensure, Enforcement and Regulation; and the Association of Test Publishers. She served on the Board of Directors of CLEAR for six years, and has been the recipient of Service Awards from both CLEAR and I.C.E.

Dana Van Laeys, MA Ed, MLS(ASCP)MBCM, CLS, ICE-Credentialing Specialist

National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)

Dana Van Laeys is the senior vice president of education success and government affairs at NCCT. She specializes in medical education and certification. Her credentials span medical laboratory science, specializing in molecular biology and education. During her hospital tenure, she held various positions within the healthcare system including front line medical laboratory scientist specializing in molecular diagnostics while teaching, and her work is published in medical journals and education courses. Now, she is involved in various aspects of medical education, certification and government affairs.
